Dataquest: Asia PC market turning the corner

PC shipments in the Asia/Pacific region reached 2.72 million for the first quarter in 1999, up 19 percent from the same quarter last year, according to market research firm Dataquest Inc.

PC shipments in the Asia/Pacific region reached 2.72 million for the first quarter in 1999, up 19 percent from the same quarter last year, according to market research firm Dataquest Inc.

The region is showing encouraging signs of recovery, with an increasing number of PC shipments, which totaled 2.28 million in the year-ago quarter, said Dataquest in a statement today.

The enforcement of strong government fiscal policies is driving the region's recovery, according to Dataquest analyst Ian Bertram. Demand for the PC is growing as countries ship less expensive products and stabilize their exchange rates, he said in a statement.

Vendor revenue in the region also rose 19 percent, Dataquest reported. Improved economic conditions have lifted the region to almost precrash days which started last year, which maintained shipment and revenue growth to the same level, said Dataquest.

China led the region in unit shipments for the first quarter, with 887,013 units, a 49 percent increase from 597,209 in the year-ago quarter. India saw the second-highest number of PC shipments with 152,994 units, up 28 percent from last year's 119,771 shipments.

Indonesia practically doubled its shipment of PCs during the first quarter, with 54,905 units, up 99 percent from last year's 27,593 shipments.

Singapore was the only country to show a slump from last year. During the first quarter, Singapore shipped 93,380 units, down 9 percent from last year's 103,350 shipments. However, Singapore's PC shipments were 13 percent higher than in the previous quarter.

While business, home and education markets are investing more in PCs, government spending showed the strongest year-over-year growth with a 24 percent increase. Government spending on PCs was highest in Indonesia and Korea, which rose 106 percent and 780 percent, respectively.

Growing 29 percent, the mobile PC market outpaced the desktop market, which saw an 18 percent increase. However, the desktop market still makes up 88 percent of the region's total PC market.

Compaq Computer Corp. recaptured the position as leading PC vendor in the region for the first quarter of 1999. Other top suppliers of PCs were IBM Corp., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. , Acer Group, and Legend Group.
