Dell overtakes Apple in sales to education market

Dell Computer has surpassed Apple Computer in sales of PCs to US educational institutions. The Round Rock, Texas, company captured a 21% share of the market in the second quarter of 1999, according to Dataquest, a Gartner Group company. Dell's recent wins in the education market include the Columbus, Ohio, Board of Education, which in September awarded a $30.2 million contract to Dell to provide district schools with 13,403 computers, integrated software, installation, training and on-site support.

Apple's market-share figures weren't immediately available.
