Cable & Wireless has announced plans to team with Compaq Computer to create a global application service provider business by January 2000.
The two companies will be investing more than $US500 million over the next five years in the new project. Cable & Wireless and Compaq will be sharing revenue stemming for this new line of business.
Cable & Wireless will be deploying Compaq servers to support application hosting services and will offer customers Compaq client access devices from standard PCs to wireless hand held devices. Compaq NonStop eBusiness consulting and professional services will also be bundled with the ASP offerings.
Cable & Wireless says the firm will be offering small and midsize business users unified messaging, sales force automation and office productivity software suites. However, the company did not specifically name which software packages would be offered.
Earlier this month Cable & Wireless announced plans to expand the number of data centers from one in Reston, Va. to more than 20 other sites in the next few years. This new data center infrastructure will be used to host Cable & Wireless' yet to be launched ASP services. The ASP service will compliment the company's existing Web hosting and wholesale hosting services.
