Is Bill Gates holed up in the super yacht Independence at the Viaduct Basin, preparing for his surprise star turn at tonight's Louis Vuitton party?
We don't think so.
In what is probably the first of a long summer of rumours about the rich and famous, hairdressers and caterers and other prime vendors of celebrity gossip have been passing on word that the Microsoft CEO is on the yacht.
But Microsoft says Gates is actually at home in Seattle for this week's World Trade Organisation ministerial meeting.
Although he does not appear to be scheduled to speak at any event, Microsoft is coordinating a high-level private sector conference on trade and e-commerce to run alongside the ministerial meeting.
Intriguingly, however, nobody is ruling out an appearance in Auckland by the world's richest man some time this summer.
Gates' friend and co-founder of Microsoft Paul Allen is known to be bringing his own yacht here for the America's Cup racing, and Gates is understood to have fielded invitations from Allen and other rich chums with antipodean holiday plans.
Microsoft New Zealand spokesperson Carol Leishman would only say yesterday that "Bill is fond of New Zealand and is looking forward to opportunities to travel - but he's not here at the moment."
