Clayton Wakefield, director of IT at the University of Auckland, will take up the post of general manager of technology at the ASB Bank from mid-February.

He replaces Garry Fissenden, who left the bank in December to become managing director of online market place SupplyNet. Fissenden spent 10 years at the bank, four in the role of IT chief.

Wakefield says staff at the bank and the university were told of his appointment over the Christmas holidays. He has been at the university for six months. Before that position Wakefield spent nine years at Telecom, as general manager of Telecom NZ Online.

He declined to comment any further on his new role. It will include managing 350 staff including software developers, buying equipment, managing ASB's electronic banking, net banking, the company's e-commerce strategy, ATMs, Eftpos and back-office operations such as cheque processing. He will also handle press and public relations on IT issues.
