Dear What Am I Worth,
I am 37. I have held a variety of positions from the age of 22, starting with applications programmer in Cobol (six months), research officer at a medical school (VAX/VMS) (1.5 years), systems manager at a university library (four years), systems administrator/analyst programmer (C, embedded SQL, Informix, OS/2, Novell, Windows) at a small software company (four years), IT coordinator at a district library (five years), with Universe/Pick and programming in the Basic programming language.
My current title is knowledge coordinator for a consultancy where I am project-managing the implementation of its national intranet. I have had staff management experience. My qualifications are BSc, MSc, Master of Library and Information Systems. I would like to find a position in the area of IT and information management in Wellington.
Protocol Personnel replies: IT management roles vary widely in their salary rates according to a variety of factors: organisation size, team size, systems used, budgetary control etc. With your current skills I would estimate your salary would be $70,000 to $75,000.
In a SME (<150 users) an IT manager could expect to earn $75,000 to $85,000. In an enterprise with 150-300 users, probably around $85,000 to $95,000. A company with greater than 300 users is likely to be $95,000-plus.
