Asia Online’s former general manager, Hugh McKellar, is off tramping in the Marlborough Sounds while he rethinks his future.
McKellar has resigned as restructuring effectively turns Asia Online in New Zealand into a branch operation. He has been replaced by the company’s head of professional services, Kevin Francis.
McKellar has headed the company since 1996 in its former incarnation as the Internet Company of New Zealand (ICONZ) and through Asia Online’s takeover in 1999.
He says he has had a number of “flattering offers” from other companies, but will take time to consider his options over the next few weeks.
McKellar says he has known about the restructuring since September last year. “It has been a natural conclusion of the company’s planning. Asia Online purchases companies around the region with a view to streamlining their business.
Pascal Grant, head of Asia Online Australia and New Zealand, paid tribute in a statement about the restructuring to McKellar's "exceptional leadership and direction to our New Zealand customers. He passes the baton to Kevin, who will lead the company into its next phase of expansion into the professional services market."
McKellar is hoping to be back. “I love this whole e-business space. Given my passion, experience, and skills, hopefully I can return to do something in that area,” he says.
