Dear What Am I Worth,

I am a printer/computer technician wanting to move into the programming world. I work for a computer company, and my main role for the past two years has involved repairing all lasers/deskjet/dot-matrix printers. Previously I worked as a computer technician for five years on hardware installations, building computers from scratch and solving software conflict issues.

I have been learning VB6.0/SQL for the past year. I have a very good understanding of ADO/DAO (Active X data objects, data access objects) databases, mainly MS Access and SQL Server. I am also experienced in programming Winsock applications and learning to program with API, COM, subclassing and encapsulating database data.

In addition to what am I worth, what skills should I concentrate harder on?

IT Futures replies: You haven't mentioned if you have a degree in computer science or not. However, if you can point to commercial experience in developing using VB6 your likely earnings will be around $45,000. Without the commercial experience you should expect to earn around $30,000.
