Dear What Am I Worth,
I am moving to Christchurch and I'm looking for a revenue IT role, preferably in lower to middle management, depending on company size.
I have 11 years' experience in various fields starting in plant control, CAD/CAM and GIS up to development level of these and moving into pure system architect role, professional training, team lead in telephone and deskside support.
I have a total of three-and-a-half years' experience in the revenue IT arena. I have an old (1992) City and Guilds level III qualification in mechanical engineering followed by later C&G qualifications in CAD and Microsoft certification in Windows 95, NT 4, NT 4 Server and TCP/IP.
I have multiplatform experience and spent the last two years implementing Tivoli TEC and Tivoli Maestro in a multiplatform environment. I have also provided third-level support for the rollout of these.
I have two years' management experience and have done my hands-on time in desk-side application and OS support. I have detailed knowledge of various flavours of DOS, OS/2, Windows 3.x, 9x, NT and 2000.
My problem is that most prospective employers see me as "jack of all trades, master of none", which is not the case. It is true I have multi-disciplinary expertise but it is to quite a considerable depth. I know what I am worth in Ireland ($NZ100,000+), but what am I worth in Christchurch?
IT Futures replies: You have a wide range of skills. The jack-of-all-trades experience could assist you in finding an organisation with a suitable role and a salary in the $60,000 to $80,000 range. The comment about Ireland does hold true but do they have the lifestyle opportunities available in Christchurch? In Auckland there have been Tivoli contracts with price tags of $80 to $100 per hour.
