Right to time off for job-related training

Trade union members have gained the right to take paid time off for employment-related education.

In the IT field, the main unions are Finsec and the EPMU, both of which say they train their members and organisers on workplace issues, such as employment law and health and safety.

EPMU spokeswoman Adelia Hallett says under the old Employment Contracts Act some firms made it difficult for staff to take such time off, but from March 1, the Employment Relations Act made it a right.

Finsec spokeswoman Jan Farr confirms her union will also be running training courses for its members, who will be informed of programmes.
