The Australian attorney-general has issued a statement hotly denying that new Australian laws regarding copyright issues make it illegal to forward an email.

“That would be ridiculous,” says the statement, which can be seen here.

The statement goes on to say, “The Copyright Amendment (Digital Agenda) Act updates copyright law to ensure it provides the same protections in an electronic environment as exist in a hard copy environment.”

According to the attorney-general’s office, copyright protection over an email kicks in only when it is deemed to be an "original literary work" which presumably would rule out most emails being forwarded around the world.
