Dear What Am I Worth,
I am a former journalist who, after several years of raising children, decided to retrain in web design. I signed up for the CIW Master Designer courses at New Horizons and am planning to sit the e-commerce exam to complete the track.
I have been working for three-and-a-half months and maintain 18 sites, three of which I have created, plus an intranet. Maintenance includes totally revamping many of the sites once a year to fit in with new marketing campaigns. I have sole responsibility for the sites, which include online registrations and searchable catalogues, graphics and writing/editing copy.
We are looking at implementing knowledge bases into all the sites and e-commerce into one this year. Having successfully completed my trial period at the company, we are renegotiating my salary and I would be interested to know what the going rate is for someone with my little experience.
Pinnacle Recruitment replies: Your journalistic skills are a real asset as you will have experience at communicating in the written word - this combined with the web design courses and the three months experience should bring your initial salary up to between $40,000 and $45,000.
