Many technologies exist to help firms cut their computing costs and the use of thin-client solutions offers the greatest potential says Gartner Research.
Principal Asia-Pacific analyst Ian Bertram also says firms can save 15% to 30% if they fully assess their total cost of ownership (TCO) of systems. He was in Auckland last week addressing Compaq clients and partners on TCO.
As the capital costs of equipment come down, fewer opportunities exist to make savings, Bertram says.
Consequently firms have to look at their administration systems, processes and procedures. Support costs also have to be considered, as they can amount to three to four times the capital cost of buying a PC. Alongside, perhaps 70% of failures can be avoided by adopting “best practice”, he says.
“There are 35 best practices used in the TCO model. You have to look at all these factors. We are talking millions for large-scale companies,” says Bertram.
