Function: Manage and operate the university’s central computer systems, LAN/WAN systems, voice systems and provide “value added” services.

Description: Manage staff, including recruitment, selection and training. Provide technical leadership and support within the department and university. Establish and manage departmental budget. Manage relationships with suppliers and other university departments.

Dosh: $70,000 to $75,000

Helping to manage New Zealand’s fifth largest IT organisation is the challenge offered by Otago University.

It is seeking a technical services manager to manage and operate the university’s IT system, which includes 8000 “desktop devices” and an extensive LAN/WAN covering Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.

The university also uses online learning systems called Black-Board Course-Info and is looking to move to voice over IP telephony technology.

Technologies used include Compaq and Cisco, Oracle relational databases, OpenVMS Unix, Novell and Microsoft products.

The successful candidate will head the 21-strong information technical services department and be answerable to Martin Anderson, the director of information services.

S/he will be responsible for a $5 million budget, which includes capital spending of $750,000 a year. The role includes negotiating supplier contracts of $100,000 to $150,000 and working with other university departments.

Other roles include working through project teams and mentoring individual team members. Some ability in financial management is also expected.

Anderson says the role is challenging as the university is a complex organisation using a wide range of technologies, product ranges and platforms.

Candidates with a strong technical background are sought, tertiary-qualified if possible, who want to manage “what is in fact a business within the university”, he says. They have to be confident in dealing with clients and be able to build and maintain business relationships.

Anderson says the job offers a chance to move from pure IT into management, and possibly his own job.

A total renumeration package of $70,000 to $75,000 is offered.
