Firms arise from WebMedia ashes

At least two companies are rising from the ashes of web design high-flier WebMedia.

At least two companies are rising from the ashes of web design high-flier WebMedia.

Ex-creative director Dan Wright left the company a couple of months ago to set up Lucky Digital in Auckland with fellow ex-WebMedians Rowan Flack and James Cooper.

The Auckland-based trio has a clutch of clients in the music and entertainment industry in New Zealand, London and Australia, including three companies in Melbourne. Cooper says their strengths are website design and software development, with some print and motion graphics. They are also working on an advertising email software product due for release in late November.

Designer Matt Buchanan, meanwhile, is setting up a design and build shop to be called Cactuslab, with another refugee from WebMedia, former technology chief Karl von Randow. The company will primarily be involved in work involving dynamic generation of content, says Buchanan. The pair claim a combined 13 years experience in the industry.

Cactuslab says it has taken over the managed hosting of several sites previously hosted by WebMedia, though this is not intended to be its key business, which is development and maintenance work for long-term clients such as 95bFM.

“We’re also working on an ultra-customisable e-commerce product for small to medium[-sized] sites,” says Buchanan.
