Dear What Am I Worth,
I am 45-years-old, married with two children and seriously considering emigrating to New Zealand from the UK. I have BEng (first class honours) degree in civil engineering and an MSc in computing science.
I having 13 years' experience in IT with a full range of IBM mainframe skillls including Cobol/DB2/JCL/REXX etc gained on both large- and small-scale developments in roles of programmer, analyst/designer and team leader.
Over the past 3+ years I have shifted to internet-based technologies, bringing the rigorous mainframe database development techniques to a PC/Server environment (the mainframe is still in the background as a "super" server data respository). Skills have expanded to encompass competency in Java, JSP, SQL Server7 and XML.
What do you think my chances are of making it in New Zealand and what salary might I expect to receive?
On the move
Icon Recruitment replies: honing in on your Cobol/DB2/JCL/Rexx skills, you have the earning potential of $60,000 to $75,000. However, these skill requirements have diminished over the years and you may have difficulty finding an appropriate position.
Your shift towards "internet-based technologies" makes you more marketable especially with the use of your mainframe knowledge. You would be earning in the region of $60,000 to $85,000.
