Dear What Am I Worth,

I’m finishing a degree in computer science. I come from animation/film/new media background. I use Java, XML, VRML, HTML, C++ and lingo. I’m working mainly in real-time 3D but in web 3D with Java/XML also. I develop real-time applications for CAD visualisation and rapid prototyping graphics. I’m currently learning OpenInventor and dedicating myself toward real-time 3D and VR.

Spherion Recruitment replies: It sounds like you have gained an excellent foundational skill set which should set you up for the future. You are to be commended for your ongoing learning and commitment to a specific sector of the market.

Now is the time to cultivate relationships with companies that work within your area of interest. Vacancies do not come up frequently in these areas and your most effective approach is likely to be direct contact with appropriate companies.

Your initial salary is likely to be in the $25,000 to $35,000 range. More important than initial salary, however, is finding a company that is going to take you where you want to go.
