Dear What Am I Worth,

I’m a Kiwi living in the UK but plan on returning to New Zealand in early 2002. I work as an applications developer for interactive TV for a cable TV company.

I have a total of four years’ web development experience (1.5 in my present job). My main skills are HTML, DTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP and SQL. I have recently learnt Java and I am looking to develop my skills in this area. I also have some experience looking after web servers and Unix machines. I have a PhD in geophysics and have extensive experience of working directly with clients as a consultant.

I am looking for either permanent or contract work as a web developer.

Spherion Recruitment replies: We have heard from a lot of New Zealanders recently who are interested in returning here, not just from the UK but also from the US and elsewhere. As you will be aware, jobs here often tend to be broader in scope than in the UK, so it may not be easy to find a role that tightly fits your experience.

The demand for web development skills has decreased considerably over past months, though you are fortunate in having other skills and experience that you can draw upon. Your initial salary here is likely to be in the range of $45,000 to $55,000 though you could earn considerably more if you land a role which draws on all your skills.
