Telecom’s JetStream service was knocked out at 3am this morning when the Telecom network experienced a failure on its ATM backbone. The failure affected not only Telecom Xtra, but other ISPs around the country.

Telecom spokesman Andrew Birmingham says the service was running again by 10.30am. He says it's hard to say how many people were affected, but that it was in the thousands.

North Shore-based Orcon HyperNet was among those affected. Orcon services and marketing manager Jay Best says that some customers were upset, but JetStream is priced low and doesn’t give a guaranteed service.

He says in the past year Orcon HyperNet been steadily upgrading corporate customers who started out with JetStream because of the price, but then decided to move to frame relay or other forms of guaranteed service.

Explosive Internet in West Auckland has some customers on JetStream who were affected, but its core business is frame relay, says spokesman Ryan Portsmouth.

ParadiseNet had customers from Auckland and Porirua phoning in about the outage.
