Kiwibank’s first day was rather tarnished by a mishap that saw at least one customer at the first Post Shop branch, in Palmerston North unable to put through a basic transaction.
The cause was a brief outage on the X.25 network serving the Postlink POS terminals used for deposits and withdrawals.
The failure had nothing to do with Kiwibank’s core systems, says NZ Post spokesman Simon Taylor.
These run on a separate IP network and remained operational, so new customers would have been able to set up accounts.
No source could be found by press time to be any more specific on the duration of the fault than “brief”.
Failures of the long-established X.25 network are “extremely rare”, Taylor says.
