Savings on IT agenda

Cost containment is on the minds of IT bosses on both sides of the Tasman, according to IDC’s Sydney-based analyst Peter Hind.

Hind presented his Forecast for Management 2002 study in Auckland last week, based on a survey of 100 New Zealand and 200 Australian IT departments. He says the preoccupation with saving is greater in Australia, where IT departments are working to get closer to business managers.

“In New Zealand this happens more naturally because businesses are more intimate.”

Hind says that’s a positive benefit of the comparative smallness of New Zealand organisations.

Despite the emphasis on keeping costs down, IT expenditure is staying steady, although shifting from hardware to external services.
