Christchurch-based website Arts & Letters Daily is the People’s Voice winner in the news category of the Webby Awards, billed as the online equivalent of the Oscars.

While members of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences judged BBC News as the best news site, the popular vote went to the New Zealand nominee.

A second New Zealand site, SciTech Daily Review, lost out in the science category to judged winner Becoming Human and popular choice NASA Earth Observatory.

It’s the sixth lot of Webbys to be handed out and the first time New Zealand sites have figured in the awards. A new award in conjunction with Nielsen//NetRatings went to Yahoo as “top global property”.
