Dear What Am I Worth,

I am a 24-year-old PhD student specialising in acoustics and vibration in telecommunications and am in the last year of study. I also have an honours degree in mechnical engineering.

IT@Work replies: Your skills are definitely in a very specialised area, and having some consulting experience in conjunction with your qualifications allows a good foot in the door to a more permanent opportunity. It is difficult to place a figure on your worth, but we would anticipate as a fresh graduate a salary ranging from $32,000 to $35,000. As a consultant you may well be able to command a more lucrative hourly rate on an as and when needed basis to organisations.
