The $99 million being set aside in the Budget for regional broadband development was a boon to regional council Environment Waikato, as it was already working on ways to improve information availability for ratepayers.

“We’re working on having aerial maps of the region, showing resource consent locations, and are looking at integrating all our planning documents on one database,” says Environment Waikato information bank regional manager Jim McLeod. With the availability of broadband, such projects will be more viable, he says.

Environment Waikato plans to hold talks with telecomms providers and ISPs over the next two months to work on a tender.
