Communications Minister Paul Swain and Telecom chief executive Theresa Gattung will on Wednesday launch Taranaki’s regional broadband project, a deal that brings together Telecom, BCL and several Taranaki district councils.

The project will be underwritten by the New Plymouth, South Taranaki and Stratford District Councils to the tune of $536,000. They will fund Telecom’s upgrade of 14 rural exchanges to DSL capability, similar to a project working successfully in Otago.

Also to be announced on Wednesday is a wireless access set-up to service the 17% of rural Taranaki that won’t be able to take advantage of the DSL deal.

Computerworld understands the wireless agreement is a partnership between BCL and Telecom, the former providing the infrastructure and the latter the billing and other back-end applications.
