The government’s part of the project to bring broadband communication to provincial and rural areas will kick off in earnest around the middle of this week, when a request for information document will be sent to telecommunications providers.

The RFI should come back from checking by officials to the pertinent ministers (Paul Swain for commerce and IT, Deputy Prime Minister Jim Anderton and Trevor Mallard for education) to be signed off early this week, said a spokesman for Swain.

The government’s proposal carries a budget of “tens of millions of dollars”; the figure has not been stated more definitely so as not to tip off bidders and thereby perhaps procure lower bids.

A number of community consortia around the country have already completed projects or have them in the course of implementation or planning.
