Sun Microsystems Inc. said today it has enlisted several companies to participate in its early access program for the release of StarPortal, its Web-based office productivity software.
Companies including Bell Atlantic Corp. and US West Inc. have agreed to use the free StarPortal software suite, which includes word processing, presentation graphics, spreadsheet and other applications for Web browsers or other portable devices, Sun said in a statement released today.
StarPortal is based on StarOffice software acquired when Sun bought German-based StarDivision Inc. in August for U.S. $73.5 million. Among its competitors will be Microsoft Corp.'s Office software.
Sun will work with a limited number of companies to test StarPortal before its final release during the first half of 2000, the company said.
