New secure broadband package for small business

Telecom's new broadband business package includes a Telecom-built firewall running on Linux, as well as a JetStream connection running at 512Kbit/s, says Telecom.

Group marketing manager for business, Graham Walmsley says Telecom is not talking in too much detail about the firewall included in the Secure Business Internet (SBI) package because “security is always a concern”.

SBI includes Xtra's server-based anti-virus software solution, a managed firewall and router, a fixed IP address along with five email addresses and domain name hosting, as well as the option to add in more services, such as URL filtering.

Walmsley says SBI is aimed at small businesses and trials have proven there is demand.

Pricing is based around megabyte usage and starts at 600MB a month for $199 excluding GST. The top of the range 10GB plan will cost $999 a month.

While the service is slower than existing JetStream connections, Walmsley says SBI includes more bandwidth per customer, ensuring better quality of service and connection reliability.

"It's across our core network and it's configured in such a way that peaks and troughs will affect it less. In effect there's more bandwidth among fewer people."
