I'm a contractor in the UK and am interested in "trying" New Zealand as a place to work. I need to know what the contract market is like at the moment: what skills are in demand, where the best locations for attracting work are, is the contract market buoyant/static at present, what my chances are of gaining contracts over a long period (several years), etc? Is it possible for me to take a working holiday to look for contracts?
Dear UK Contractor
Without knowledge of your specific skills or area of contracting experience it is difficult to provide a detailed answer. In general the IT contracting market in New Zealand is reasonably active at the moment. In particular, skills in the "e-business" sector covering technical development and project management, solid network engineering, C++ and Unix are in demand. We suggest you visit New Zealand recruitment Web sites to assess the availability of jobs as they relate to your specific skills. Most roles are in the main cities - Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. If coming to work in New Zealand you will need to check with New Zealand Immigration (www.immigration.govt.nz) regarding work permits, etc.
