Dear What Am I Worth,

I've recently moved from Australia to New Zealand. I have been working mainly on corporate information systems for four years, covering all aspects of the system development life-cycle with typical implementations being Visual Basic and Microsoft Access Management Information Systems. I've recently obtained MCP [Microsoft Certified Professional] status (Visual Basic 6 - Designing and Implementing Desktop Applications) and I hold a strong background in SQL and database methodologies.

I hold a Bachelor of Computer Science degree and have learnt many languages including C, C++, Java, Oracle Forms etc as well as Seagate Crystal reports etc. I've also trained end users, produced system documentation and administered Novell accounts, etc. I have a strong practical working knowledge of Windows 95/98, NT, etc. I've spent a year contracting in a partnership that a friend and I began last year and successfully consulted in Visual Basic programming. I've also attended short courses in project management.

Mercury Consulting Group replies: It is difficult to see what kind of position you would be interested in. If you are interested in moving more into project management an initial salary of around $55,000 is a possibility. However if you are interested in staying in development then around $65,000. Novell administration and application analysis are also options, perhaps at around $45,000 initially.
