Fisher & Paykel Finance says it is getting better control of its projects thanks to a software tool developed in Auckland.

The web-based project management and collaboration software product, Project Control, was created by two-year-old developer iTools.

Fisher & Paykel general manager of IT Stephen Waters says his firm has used iTools project control tools for 10 months to manage “virtual” projects for offsite staff.

“It assigns tasks to them and raises defects and issues in projects once we have gone to user acceptance tests. The software also has a workflow engine for process control,” he says.

He judges the product “quite good”, noting that features in the latest version still have to be added to the one F&P Finance uses. “The latest version has much better features — a dashboard reporting component that has made it much more useable,” Waters says.

ITools director Chris Bulman says other project management software products such as SAP Project and those from knowledge management specialists US-based Artemis International are available, but they don’t inhabit the same functional area — the “control and execution phase of a project or programme of work”.

The firm writes in a Microsoft environment, using SQL Server. The software can be rented on a managed basis, which is how most of his customers demand it, Bulman says.

The company is exploring the UK market, he says, employing a staff member there in addition to the four in Auckland. “A very large, well-respected global brand is trialing the software,” he says, declining to identify it or its industry.

ITools claims TelstraClear and the Health Alliance consortium of South Auckland and Waitemata health boards among its customers.
