TelstraClear says it is working with Tranz Rail to avoid a repeat of last week's problems which saw nearly 5000 users south of Oamaru without phone or internet access for more than 12 hours. TelstraClear public affairs manager Mathew Bolland says the problem appears to have been caused by general land subsidance, rather than any specific problems with Tranz Rail track placement as was previously feared. Boland says it took a while to find the actual break in the line. The link has been temporarily fixed while work has begun on replacing the damaged line and protecting it in some kind of underground duct. "That should take the brunt of any movement in future."
