Genesis moves to e-commerce

Power company Genesis has broken into e-commerce with a new Web site offering meter reading and retail services.

Previously the company just offered information on its Web site, but now CEO Murray Jackson says Genesis has crossed "the digital divide" making power e-tailing "as easy for customers as turning on a light switch".

"At www.genesisenergy.co.nz people can now read their own meters and submit readings online," says Jackson.

"New customers can join up online and learn about Genesis and our loyalty progbrammes. They can find out about payment options and set these up.

"We recognise that when it comes to electricity, more and more people will want the same sort of Net-based services as those being offered by online banking or shopping," he says.

The Web site also allows:

  • Setting up a new account due to moving house.
  • Printing off direct debit and automatic payment forms.
  • The ability to query accounts via e-mail.

New services include advising customers about home safety and energy efficiency. There is also a hotlink to the Consumers Institute site where they can get an independent view on electricity prices.

Genesis supplies a fifth of New Zealand's power across both islands and is our third largest generator. It also has an 0800-Genesis toll-free hotline.
