Shopping in historic British markets is moving into the 21st century, with one of the largest centres going online.

Kirkgate Market in Leeds, West Yorkshire, says 600 of its 800 stallholders will soon feature on the Web site, which it says could be the biggest in the world.

Formed in 1207, the market claims to be Europe's busiest with 2 million customers a week.

The Web site, www.leedsmarket.com, features maps of the market, pictures and information on stalls, some of which have their own Web site.

The site offers both perishable and non-perishable goods, including fresh fish and tripe.

Initially orders are by email and phone, but soon online ordering will be possible.
