The company that bought a number of newly coined .maori.nz domain names for various iwi has agreed to transfer the names to the iwi concerned if they cover the $74 transfer fee.
If the iwi had bought the domain names themselves the cost would have been the same - $44 plus a $30 fee for a new registrant (not including GST).
Craig Beecroft, former CEO of the Tainui Corporation, is partner in Net Name Exchange and bought several dozen names in the new space.
"We own a series of names that we believe are of some commercial value and took the same view of the .maori.nz names."
Beecroft says the company owns a number of names in the .maori.nz space that it isn't selling.
"There's health.maori.nz and education.maori.nz that we will look to sell and make some money on but the domain names that are specific to an iwi - we don't think it's the right thing to do really, to try and on-sell those."
The Net Names Exchange site lists 18 iwi names that are to be transferred to the iwi concerned, including tainui.maori.nz.
Domainz has registered over 250 names in the .maori.nz space since the launch late last week.
