Clear goes free on e-biz too

Clear has extended its range of free offerings to the e-business category, with a 'starter pack' version of its credit card clearing application.

Clear has extended its range of free offerings to the e-business category, with a "starter pack" version of its credit card clearing application.

The company is to provide free-of-charge PaySafe starter packs, which allow businesses to accept and verify up to 50 credit card transactions per month.

Clear says PaySafe is a suite of e-business applications that incorporate the ASP-based Payment Gateway application it launched last year.

The new offer could well prove attract to businesses who want to accept credit card transactions, especially online, but have been deterred by the relatively high fees associated with similar real-time clearance products.

Clear communications manager, Commercial, Rochelle Lockley, says the company decided to introduce the free version of the application to overcome "the widespread perception that e-business products are really expensive."

Would-be e-businesses will need only an Internet connection, a recent version Web browser and a merchant account with their bank to begin using the PaySafe product.

Clear's e-business spokesman Wayne Nicholas says the company wants to remove the barriers to ebusiness for growing enterprises, noting that because the application is hosted at Clear, it requires no upfront capital expenditure and no hardware or software maintenance.

As the transaction volume for small businesses increases, they will be able to step to various Payment Gateway products. Clear's 'Starter Pack Plus' costs $50 to set up and $50 monthly for up to 150 transactions. Its Regular Pack, which includes a managed frame relay connection, costs $625 to set up and $755 monthly for up to 1000 transactions.
