Excellence winners celebrate

Information technology was 'it' on Friday as more than 300 of New Zealand's computer chiefs and representatives met in Auckland for the annual Computerworld Excellence Awards.

Information technology was "it" on Friday as more than 300 of New Zealand's computer chiefs and representatives met in Auckland for the annual Computerworld Excellence Awards.

The awards, attended by IT Minister Paul Swain and his National-party contemporary Maurice Williamson, revealed a wide range of world-beating talent.

Learnz 99, developed by Heurisko of Christchurch, won the best use of IT in Education category for its "virtual field trips", adding to international acclaim and exports.

Top dairy firm and major exporter, Hamilton-based New Zealand Dairy Group won the Excellence in the Use of IT in ERP category winner for their Project Apia information systems upgrade, which the firm says will bring a "quantum leap in business efficiencies".

AXA New Zealand, formerly National Mutual, won Best People Practice and the IS Manager of the Year categories - Ross Hughson.

Alasdair Thompson of the Employers and Manufacturers Association (Northern) won the CEO IT Vision category by introducing IT and new services to revive the organisation.

The Computerworld Excellence Awards also provide some good news for the government.

The National Library with its new Te Puna computer systems won the use of IT in Government category, a system that is now judged a world leader being copied by others.

The Department of Conservation's and Fujitsu New Zealand won the Most Successful Project Implementation category for linking systems in Project 2000.

And CourierPost won the Overall Excellence in the Use of IT category for its FactsBack tracking device and a raft of other initiatives.

  • Technology Innovator of the Year - Infolink for Infoshare.
  • CEO IT Vision Winner - Alasdair Thompson, Employers and Manufacturers Association (Northern).
  • IS Manager of the Year - Ross Hughson, AXA New Zealand.
  • Most Successful Project Implementation of the Year- Department of Conservation and Fujitsu New Zealand for Connect 2000.
  • Overall Excellence in the Use of IT - CourierPost
