Dear What Am I Worth,

My husband and I are toying with the idea of coming back to Christchurch to live. He is a senior software developer at an investment bank in London. He has worked mainly in telecomms (seven years), but also in the life assurance industry.

He has a Bachelor of Science with first class honours (A average) majoring in computer science from Canterbury University.

He has six years’ experience in C/C++, Win 32 (NT and 2000), as well as OO A&D. He has experience in MFC, ATL, COM, STL, Rational Rose, Java and VB.

He not only has outstanding technical skills, he also (okay, so I'm biased, but I'm not the only one that thinks so) has exceptional communication and people skills for a person in any field, let alone IT.

Wanting to come home

Elan IT replies: The telcos in New Zealand are still very much in a state of flux, restructuring and refocusing their business; however, there are some innovative companies here working in voice and text messaging, and billing platforms that look for skills and experience within the telco industry.

He could expect $75,000 to $80,000 as a permanent employee with team leadership skills, although you don’t say whether he has managed teams. I would suggest any team leadership or management skills be highlighted on his CV as this is of interest to employers, particularly with smaller companies that look for a diverse range of skills within their employees.
