Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, may be winging his way to Australia later in the year but won't be making the jump across the ditch to New Zealand.

Despite the lure of America's Cup yachting, bungy jumping in Queenstown or skiing on a live volcano, the outspoken extrovert who took over the big swivelly chair from founder Bill Gates in 2000, has chosen to spend his time talking to vendors and customers in Australia instead.

The trip to Australia is part of an Asia Pacific tour that Ballmer is conducting in the fourth quarter, although dates have yet to be finalised.

Ballmer did visit New Zealand in 1996 as vice president not long after the launch of Windows 95.
