Arts and Letters Daily, the site set up and run by Canterbury arts professor Dennis Dutton, has been closed down.
AL Daily began in 1998 and in November 1999 Dutton sold the site to University Business (which published US magazine Lingua Franca), but continued as editor. However, University Business filed for bankruptcy earlier this year and its assets, including AL Daily, will be auctioned off later this month.
Dutton continues to edit and run a companion site, Philosophy and Literature while a number of offshoots from AL Daily continue in business including SciTech Daily Review, Business Daily Review, as well as the Arts Journal and Human Nature Review.
Lingua Franca founder, Jeffrey Kittay, hopes to buy the magazine's assets from the bankruptcy court according to the New York Times, however no mention is made of Arts and Letters Daily.
AL Daily won numerous awards including a People's Voice award for best news site at this year's Webby's.
Dutton was unavailable for comment this morning.
