Christchurch Police and Canterbury University's computing services department are investigating a threat made in online discussion groups last weekend to kill people on the university’s campus.

The threat appeared in nz.general and two other groups over the weekend of October 19 and 20, in 60 substantially identical messages.

“I’m going to kill everyone on campus!” the threat ran, with violent anti-Semitic sentiments.

When the Monash University shooting happened in Melbourne on Monday, some newsgroup contributors wondered whether the Canterbury address may have been a false trail; but prevailing opinion put it down to a bizarre coincidence.

Although the address of the posts was a false one, an ex-pat Kiwi in the US uncovered traces of a student account at Canterbury University in the message's full header.

The individual whose name and account identifier were attached to the messages has verified that he is a Canterbury University student and denies responsibility for the hate postings. The student says police questioned him at about 11am on Saturday.
