Handspring has released the GPRS software upgrade for its Treo range of phone/PDAs.

The Treo Communicator family is a Palm OS based PDA with a GSM phone built in.

Users of the Treo 180, 180g and 270 can now download the upgrade that includes enhancements to the device's SMS capability as well to activate links and email addresses within the text message. Automatic network configuration is also included as well as some tweaks to the voice phone functionality.

GPRS is the faster data overlay that runs on the GSM voice network. Vodafone says GPRS users should see traffic speeds of around 50 KBit/s.

Handspring products are distributed in New Zealand by Vodafone.
