Toy Box: Now that's what I call roaming

Say Finland and cellphones in the same breath and most would assume you're talking about Nokia. But there's another cellphone company near Santa's hideaway and its phones come with an added extra: global positioning.

Say Finland and cellphones in the same breath and most would assume you're talking about Nokia. But there's another cellphone company near Santa's hideaway and its phones come with an added extra: global positioning.

Benefon, which is being distributed in New Zealand by Care Tech, offers a range of phones that include a built-in GPS locator beacon.

The Esc! promises full mapping capability "down to the street number". It can even send an emergency message to a preconfigured number that tells them exactly where you are.

Actually, that's quite cool -- given the cellphone coverage in New Zealand you could happily take this with you just about anywhere you like (within city limits, of course) without a care in the world. Now that's what I call roaming.

Someone might like to mention it to Vodafone though. These phones run on the GSM network and apparently have been available for some time, but there's nothing about them on the Vodafone website. Not even pricing. Ah well. Perhaps if you're good, Santa will bring you one.
