Dear What Am I Worth,
I have been operating an IT consultancy in Blenheim for five-and-a-half years while completing a Bachelor of Information Science (information systems/mathematics) extramurally. The services I provide include training, technical support, upgrades, hardware and software sales and web design. A 12-month contract during this time involved implementing a new Windows NT network and financial management system for a corporate client.
Before this this I spent three years in computer sales and support in a retail environment in Blenheim and Christchurch, and six years doing systems administration for a medical lab in Palmerston North.
I am skilled in various programming languages and in supporting most common operating systems (Windows/Mac/Linux).
I am moving to Auckland and will be looking for contract work before going overseas.
Alliance IT Recruitment replies: As someone self-employed and independent you might be able to get $70-plus an hour on a consultancy basis contracting directly to clients. Conversely, as a contractor working for a company you would earn $25 to $40 an hour, depending on the depth of your skills and knowledge.
