Auckland-based ISP ICONZ has signed on as the first broadband reseller of electricity company Counties Power's fibre optic network.
The Counties Power network, marketed under the company name Wired Country, operates in the Pukekohe region, south of Auckland city, and later to the wider Franklin County and Papakura.
ICONZ already resells broadband services from Telecom, in the form of switched frame relay or dedicated frame over ATM, as well as United Networks and CityLink in Wellington. ICONZ also provides DSL from Telecom and a wireless option as well.
Counties Power's fibre network is the latest in a series of smaller, regional developments in the broadband field. Both CityLink and United Networks are regionally based, with United running its fibre along its gas pipes network - United is a utilities company recently bought out by Mercury Energy.
Other networks coming on stream in the next 12 months include the scheme undertaken by the South Waikato District Council (Broadband demand exceeds expectations in South Waikato) which will charge end users only $55 a month for unlimited broadband capacity.
