Telco commissioner ruling promises more choice

Telecom has been told to offer a 16% discount off retail prices to TelstraClear so it can provide a range of competing services.

The telecommunications commissioner has settled on a wholesale price that Telecom can charge TelstraClear for using the Telecom network.

The price – 16% below retail – applies largely to use of the network by TelstraClear for provision of business services and residential broadband, says commissioner Douglas Webb.

"What this determination means for small businesses and customers is that they now have the choice of having either Telecom or TelstraClear as their supplier of many telecommunication services, even in areas beyond the reach of the TelstraClear access network," says Webb.

Services covered by the determination include business line rental and local calling, fixed-to-mobile services, directory assistance, voice messaging, business and residential broadband access and data services outside the major centres.

The rate will apply for 18 months from today.
