Wellington city is looking to extend its self-bestowed title of “the Wired Capital” by boosting the wireless component of its public networks.

The city council is seeking the aid of Wellington-based MediaLab South Pacific, which has a particular interest in developing local expertise in wireless technology.

The first step will be to extend the present limited CBD coverage of CityLink’s CafeNet public Wi-Fi network to “at least the length of Lambton Quay”, says the council’s external relations director, Ray Lind.

The wireless proponents will also propose to the council that future council-owned housing units be provided with wireless rather than cable connectivity to digital services. This will be easier to install, he says. The proponents are “working up a number of small projects”, says Lind, and aim to put a paper before the council’s economy and arts committee on June 4.
