Systems integrator

I have a good amount of experience and expertise in all the components of IT within our company, but have not had time to become specialised in any one particular area.

Dear What Am I Worth,

I am 26 years' old and work within a small IT team with a successful manufacturing company based in Hamilton.

My official job title is that of systems integrator, but in reality my job involves much more.

I have worked in this role since graduating with a BSc in information systems from the University of Waikato two years ago, but I have no other formal qualifications.

While at university I earned money by building database applications in MS Access, and I was also employed to tutor computer users.

I have a good amount of experience and expertise in all the components of IT within our company, but have not had time to become specialised in any one particular area.

My OS experience includes the installation, administration and maintenance of NT 4 at the workstation level and NT 4, IBM AIX, and Linux at the server level.

My network administration role includes the maintenance and development of our LAN and WAN solutions. Since starting with this company, I have implemented a significant upgrade of our WAN and have put in place solutions that allow us to remotely support our staff in Australia.

My software development role includes the maintenance and development of our extensive in-house database applications (using the Dataflex 4GL), and I also perform database administration duties.

I have developed an intranet for the company which is mainly used for user support and systems documentation.

As systems integrator I am responsible for evaluating and implementing all third-party hardware, software and service solutions.

I also perform hardware installation, maintenance, upgrades and am responsible for providing support to the users in our company.

More than systems integrator

Sapphire Technologies replies: With two years' work experience in a support role, with skills in LAN/WAN, NT, AIX and Linux, as well as your additional expertise in DBA and development, you'll earn between $50,000 to $60,000 in Auckland.

As living costs are less in Hamilton, as well as pay rates, you would probably be looking at around $45,000 to $55,000 in Hamilton.
