The Web is working wonders for exports at an Auckland software firm.

Marshal Software, an offshoot of Designer Technology, says it is enjoying exploding growth thanks to marketing its email security programmes over the Internet. The company employed only three staff last year, with a further five developers, but now has eight in marketing, and 10 in development. Designer Technology, which was formed in 1994, has increased total staff from 25 to 37 in the past year. The success of its online business servicing overseas customers has led to its nomination as a finalist in the 2000 Trade New Zealand Export Awards. Marshal Software's email filter was first commissioned in 1997 by several major New Zealand companies. Some 25 of the top 40 Kiwi companies, including Air New Zealand, Fletcher Challenge and major law firms, use the system. Overseas clients include NASA, the University of California, Fortis Bank in the Netherlands, South Africa Standard Bank and Alltel, a US telecommunications company with 24,000 sites, the company's largest customer. "We have primarily targeted Australia, Europe, UK and the US as markets to actively promote the software but we have made significant sales into other markets such as South Africa, " says Marshal Software marketing manager Martin Oxley.

"We would not have been able to do this without using the Web.

"The downloadable nature of the software has been crucial to our export success. Almost anyone, anywhere in the world can acquire the software in 15 minutes and be using it within an hour," he says. Marshal Software's latest commendation is in TradeNZ's DHL E-Commerce Innovation Award category. The winners will be announced in November. The company was also the Computerworld Excellence Awards 1999 Technology Innovator of the Year.
