Programmer returns home

Two years experience in UK, wants to know worth in New Zealand

Dear What am I Worth

I am programmer returning to New Zealand this year after working two years in London and my employer would like to retain my services on a consultancy basis. The company is possibly the third largest financial information provider in the world behind Reuters and Bloomberg. I presently earn Stg 43 an hour, which I guess is equal to over $120. I am skilled in C++ for ten years (very competent), Unix and NT – Sun Workshop, Visual C++, Borland and Java for six` months. I have Web development skills - HTML, JavaScript etc; plus NAS 2.1, 4.0 and iPlanet app server. I can do most types of Oracle. I was also team leader of a group of ten staff for 18 months, plus I have financial experience.

Candle IT & T Recruitment replies: Your present hourly rate in the UK is high compared to that offered in New Zealand. Your skills are in good demand, here, but your expectations should be around $70 per hour. Oracle Financials, if you have these skills, are also in good demand, but again $70 per hour is what you would expect. There will be tax issues you need to consider if you are working from New Zealand as a consultant through a UK company. You may have to contact the IRD in New Zealand for advice.
